Understanding Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies can occur unexpectedly and often require immediate attention to prevent further complications. Here are some key points to help you understand what constitutes a dental emergency:
- Severe Toothache: Persistent and intense tooth pain can indicate an underlying issue that needs prompt treatment.
- Broken or Chipped Teeth: Accidents or injuries that result in broken, cracked, or chipped teeth require urgent care to prevent infection or further damage.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: Immediate action is crucial for saving a tooth that has been knocked out.
- Lost Filling or Crown: A lost filling or crown can expose the tooth to damage and infection.
- Abscess or Infection: Swelling, pain, or pus around the gums can signal a serious infection that needs urgent attention.
Common Dental Emergencies and How to Handle Them
At our clinic, we are equipped to handle a wide range of dental emergencies. Here are some of the most common situations and initial steps you can take before reaching us:
- Severe Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any food particles that might be causing pain. Avoid applying aspirin directly to the tooth or gums.
- Broken or Chipped Teeth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces of the tooth. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and contact us immediately.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: Keep the tooth moist at all times. Try placing it back in the socket without touching the root, or store it in a container of milk. Seek immediate dental care.
- Lost Filling or Crown: If a filling or crown falls out, use dental cement or a piece of sugarless gum to temporarily cover the exposed area and prevent discomfort.
- Abscess or Infection: Rinse your mouth with mild salt water to reduce pain and draw out some of the infection. Do not attempt to drain the abscess yourself.

patientI have had only the best experiences with Dr. Kaplan since I switched dentists a few years ago. He’s smart and very skilled and takes great pride in his work and his staff of dental hygienists and office staff. Very friendly and nice people that make every visit as pleasant as possible. Facilities are very clean and modern with state of the art equipment and processes. Staff retention seems to be very high from what I can see, and that says a lot about the management and culture there. I highly recommend Dr. Kaplan to anyone looking for a good dental practice… and that in itself says a lot.
